Happy Baltic Sea Day

Happy Baltic Sea Day

Thursday  29th of  August  marks the sixth annual Baltic Sea Day. It’s a day for celebrating the precious sea that hugs our coasts – and a reminder that this small sea needs our help.

This is how it usually goes: if you spend enough time near the sea, you can’t live without it. You get that salt in your veins. Us Finns tend to instinctively navigate toward water. For some, it’s the inland lakes that rank within thousands – and for some, it’s the Baltic Sea that hugs our coastline in the West and South.

All seas are unique, but the Baltic Sea stands in a league of its own: it's not only the youngest of the planet's seas but also unusually shallow and low in salinity. It's a peculiar sea that has influenced our culture and mindscape since times immemorial. Also, many of Makia’s designs are indebted to the immence influence our sea has had on us.

Unfortunately, it's also one of the world's most polluted oceans. The aspects that make the Baltic Sea unique, such as the low total volume of water, make it extremely vulnerable to human actions. And boy, have we dropped the ball.

Fortunately, there are many who are tirelessly working to help the Baltic Sea. One of them is the John Nurminen Foundation – the founder of the Baltic Sea Day. Launched as a way to raise awareness about the sea's state, the Baltic Sea Day is a continuation of the foundation's efforts to aid the sea.
